The weekends here at The DX Ranch are always a bit more laid back than the weekdays. We had a lot of rain last night, so the grounds are muddy yet again here in South Dakota.
The day started off as usual with my daily chores. After that we all headed to Granny's where Zach made us breakfast. He cooked bacon, eggs, toast, and english muffins. It was all amazing as usual. By the time ten thirty rolled around, Burt and I were heading down to the pastures to check on cows. We got through about thrirty cows when the Ranger started overheating. Burt tried scraping out some of the mud that had gotten stuck between the grill and engine, when he noticed a small radiator leak. We headed back to the barn and decided there wasn't anything more we could really do. So now we're down two out of two rangers (the first being in the shop since before I arrived).
After that, there were only house chores to do really. We worked in the new house. I swept the kitchen and laundry room, as well as washed the windows in Jenn and Zach's bedroom, Jenn's office, and the living room. Let's just say I'm very good at cleaning windows now.
Somewhere in the house duties we went down to Granny's for a late lunch. She had made a yummy stem that consisted of steak chunks, potatoes, and I'm not sure what else if anything. It was quite deliteful.
Six thirty in the evening rolled around and we had just gotten Chachi and Dino in the barn. Without the Ranger, we had to shake a bucket of oats and call out to them in hopes that they would come running. About five or six of them did come from quite a ways away.
In the two hours that I rode, I could see everything Jenn has gone over in the last few days finally starting to come together. I was able to get Chachi moving out a bit more and got him to move through transitions only using my seat. Boy is it remarkable to see what these horses can do compared to all the school horses I've ridden that have been pulled on and kicked way too much. It really makes you appreciate what they go through and how when I go back to MSU I can help to change that.
Nine o'clock came around and we headed to Bud's for dinner. We had Brautwursts and they were very appetizing after such a long day.
I fed my calves right afterword and didn't get back to my room until nearly ten o'clock. It has been a long day today (even for a laid back day); thankfully tomorrow will be laid back as well. Perhaps I can catch up on some sleep.
