Today was quite a bittersweet kind of day.
We lost Annabelle this morning, our newest bottle calf. She wasn't drinking well the last few days, so she didn't make it. It shook me up a little.
We went out with Burt to check the cows this morning and ended up tagging 12 calves. We haven't checked them in a while so it was expected to find quite a few.
We then had lunch at Granny's. She cooked an amazing roast with mashed potatos and cheesy green beans. While we ate we watched the movie The Benchwarmers. Can't say that i'll ever watch that one again.
After lunch, we headed down to the barn where Melissa and I got the saddle horses in. Burt brought Jack in and Ty worked with George. Ty worked on moving George out more and worked outside the round pen. Then we each got to ride him a bit. Melissa did some groundwork with Jack before saddling him. Jenn then worked with him as well.
I brought in Gump while Calico brought in Dino and we saddled up. They were really dirty since it rained a good chunk of the day yesterday. I rode Gump a few weeks ago when I was still trying to figure everything out. The improvement from then to today in what I could get him to do astonished me. I was quickly able to get him to respond to my feet and he moved out wonderfully. It seems as if it's all magic.
I hopped on Dino for a bit and worked on some more roping while on him. I got a few good loops in and worked more on getting my reins figured out with the rope coils in the same hand.
Melissa got Banjo for Steve and he rode again. He rode around a while and we answered the questions he asked. Zach stepped in after a while and helped him to get Banjo moving out more and going where Steve wanted him to.
Jenn's sister, Megan, got on Gump and rode around for a bit while Melissa hopped on Dino. After she was done, Jenn got on Dino and worked on getting him to move out at the lope and worked on turning some barrels.
Now our calves have been fed and we're at Jenn ans Zach's for dinner. As the bittersweet day comes to an end, it really was more sweet than bitter; a fun filled day of ranching.
